Industry-leading, proprietary technology ensures all products are the best-fit solution for applications spanning the automotive, industrial, and consumer fields.
Magnetic sensors work by detecting the presence of a magnetic field and providing actionable data regarding the positioning, speed, rotation, and/or direction of movement of an object, gifting systems with the ‘sight’ necessary to interpret the world around them and respond accordingly. In practice, this allows for the commutation of brushless motors, the measurement of wheel, crank, and transmission speed, object detection for door closing, window lifting and automatically activating/deactivating functions, among other applications.

Contactless design, broad temperature range, high-stability features
Infineon’s magnetic field sensors feature entirely contactless designs, allowing unparalleled longevity with minimal wear and tear over time. Broad temperature ranges, high stability of magnetic thresholds, and advanced protection technologies such as short-circuit protection and reverse voltage protection ensure sensors can be employed anywhere, even in the traditionally inhospitable operating environments. A range of interface and connection options also allow for seamless integration into existing and new systems with the option to select from numerous automotive and industry-compliant sensors.
Infineon offers magnetic sensor types which incorporate AMR, GMR, TMR, and Hall technology to provide the best fit for every situation. Position sensors are further categorized by the type of positional data required as magnetic switches, linear sensors, angle sensors, and 3D magnetic sensors. Meanwhile, magnetic speed sensors use Hall, GMR, and next-generation TMR technology to measure speed and directional data within safety and powertrain applications.
Accurate and highly reliable magnetic position sensor modules
All magnetic position sensors interpret a proximal magnetic field in order to relay positional data. However, the way in which they interpret that field and relay information is what differentiates them. There are different types of magnetic position sensors; even though they are all extremely versatile across applications, some are more suited for certain applications than others.
Magnetic switches and magnetic latches operate on the Hall effect principle to detect the presence of a magnetic field. Minimal energy consumption and considerable temperature operation ranges make them ideally suited for cross-industry proximity detection in a range of environments. Linear sensors measure a magnetic field across a horizontal axis and relay a proportional signal for precise angular and linear position detection. Angle sensors (AMR, GMR, and TMR) measure the sine and cosine angles of a magnetic field and precisely relays its orientation. And finally, 3D sensors offer an unprecedented degree of control by tracking magnetic fields across all three axes. This makes them suitable for linear, rotational, and three-dimensional tracking.
Sensitive, reliable speed sensors with Hall, GMR, and TMR technologies
Infineon’s magnetic speed sensors employ Hall, GMR, and TMR technologies to offer highly sensitive, reliable, and accurate speed and direction information. As with magnetic position sensors, there are also different types of magnetic speed sensors available in our product portfolio. Even though finding considerable application within the automotive industry, similar industrial magnetic sensor applications are also common.
We offer a variety of speed sensor solutions, including crank speed sensors which have been designed for use in harsh industrial and automotive environments. Our cam speed sensors, on the other hand, feature advanced camshaft sensing performance and improved adaption in automotive applications. From automatic door locking to adaptive multimedia systems and autonomous driving functions, our magnetic wheel speed sensors equip modern automobiles with the intelligence it requires.
Highest accuracy for automotive applications
Magnetic sensors are essential to the automotive industry. A magnetic vehicle sensor of some description is present in a range of applications spanning the breadth of engine function, safety-essential features, and quality-of-life touches. Speed sensors relay critical data regarding the speed and direction of the crank, wheels, and transmission, enabling major systems such as speedometers, anti-lock brakes, automatic transmissions, and park assistance to function.
Magnetic position sensors for automotive applications are responsible for everything from closing windows and sunroofs, seat belt detection, and headlight adjustment to indispensable applications for BLDC commutation, power steering, and throttle control.
Our broad portfolio of sensors for industrial & consumer applications
Though the demand for magnetic field detection sensors is the largest within the automotive industry, there is also considerable potential within the industrial and consumer sectors. As the largest magnetic sensor manufacturer globally, Infineon is proud to cater to the requirements of all three sectors with sensors specifically optimized for harsh operating conditions, cost-effectiveness, reduced energy consumption, and a vast number of other customizable advantages dependent on the industry and application.
Types of magnetic sensors
Infineon’s portfolio of magnetic sensors is divided into two types: magnetic position sensors and magnetic speed sensors. Each magnetic field detection sensor benefits from the highest standards of accuracy, versatility to function within a range of operating parameters, and exceptional reliability.
Magnetic position sensors identify the presence of a magnetic field to accurately detect the positional data of an object. Magnetic speed sensors are responsible for detecting the speed (and direction, should it be required) of rotating target wheels. For automotive applications, these magnetic sensors have been broadly categorized by function within the cam- and crankshaft, wheels, and transmission systems, and are used to inform everything from the speedometer to the ABS and - increasingly - autonomous driving.
All magnetic position sensors interpret a proximal magnetic field in order to relay positional data; however, the way in which they interpret that field and relay information is what differentiates them. Though magnetic position sensors are extremely versatile across applications, some are more suited to certain applications than others.
