Infineon Announces New Bluetooth Solutions - First Samples of the World's Smallest Single-chip Bluetooth Solution Available
Monte Carlo - June 5, 2001 - Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX) today announced four new members of its BlueMoon product family: BlueMoon Single, BlueMoon Single Voice, BlueMoon Multimedia and BlueMoon BlueStar. With these new products Infineon expands its leadership in semiconductor solutions for short range wireless applications, such as Bluetooth, DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) and WDCT (Worldwide Digital Cordless Telecommunications).
As the Bluetooth market diversifies, Infineon continues to quickly provide specialised Bluetooth solutions for the industry, said Christian Baumgart, Vice President and General Manager of Infineons Business Unit Short Range Wireless. Our goal is to enable our customers to extend their leading position in the fast growing Bluetooth market segments.
Infineon has now started to sample BlueMoon Single, the worlds highest integrated semiconductor solution for the Bluetooth short range wireless technology. This solution combines baseband DSP, radio functionality, memory and software, all integrated into one single-chip and aimed at applications requiring Bluetooth functionality in small form factor such as cellular phones and personal digital assistants.
BlueMoon Single complements Infineons BlueMoon family and targets applications where size is of highest priority. The BlueMoon family now is the broadest semiconductor solutions offering worldwide and comprises solutions optimized for each of the main application segments. BlueMoon Single combines Infineons expertise in radio circuit design with state-of-the-art CMOS technology. The advanced architecture is based on the already proven and Bluetooth V1.1 qualified baseband technology and software from the BlueMoon I chipset together with a new high performance radio part realised in CMOS technology. Special measures have been taken to assure highest performance over temperature and minimize spurious emissions of the RF part. The BlueMoon Single features integrated ROM-based memory and offers an external Flash-interface for rapid prototyping and pre-production. The Bluetooth V1.1 qualified Link Manager and HCI (Host Controller Interface) is supplied with the IC as firmware. The BlueMoon Single integrates a 920 kBaud UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) for data as well as a dedicated PCM interface for voice.
The BlueMoon Single Voice is a turnkey, single-chip solution for headset applications. It comprises a high-performance, full duplex voice codec, power management and charging control as well as the complete headset profile with a customizable man-machine interface.
The BlueMoon Multimedia chipset is designed for sophisticated PC and multimedia applications, such as laptops, digital cameras and MP3 players. It integrates an ARM7 µC and includes a Software API (Application Programmers Interface) enabling host and application SW integration. It supports a wide variety of high-speed interfaces (USB, parallel and serial). Building on standard Bluetooth specifications, the BlueMoon Multimedia offers an additional mode for high data rate transmission in combination with Infineon RF transceivers allowing data rates of up to 4 Mbit/s.
The BlueMoon BlueStar IP is a fully synthesizable VHDL (Very High Description Language) core together with compilable Link Manager Software in C source code enabling fast and simple integration of Bluetooth functionality into application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) and high-volume applications, like cellular basebands, PDAs and printers. It is designed for Bluetooth embedded solutions and provides a high degree of flexibility regarding manufacturing process technology, on chip bus architectures and µController support (eg ARM7, ARM9 and TriCore)
Manufactured in an advanced 0,25 µm CMOS process, the BlueMoon Single is available in a small outline LFBGA 81 package measuring a tiny 7 mm x 7 mm. Target customers are being sampled today and volume production start is scheduled for end 2001. The pricing for the BlueMoon Single is Euro 7.50 for volumes of 1 Million units. The BlueMoon Single Voice and BlueMoon Multimedia will be sampled to focus customers in Q3 this year. The pricing for the solutions will be below Euro 10 for volumes over 1 Million units. The BlueMoon BlueStar macro IP is today available for integration based on a license model.
The BlueMoon product family also includes the Bluetooth V1.1 qualified BlueMoon I solution supporting a 920 kBaud UART and a 2 Mbit/s PCM interface ideally suited for modules and Bluetooth adapters, as well as a wide variety of Bluetooth amplifiers for long range class 1 operation.
For all BlueMoon members, highest priority was set on manufacturability. Novel design concepts have minimized the number and the cost of the external components.
Infineon Technologies stands for proven delivery performance as well as for high level of quality through its own world class semiconductor fabs with all relevant technologies for Bluetooth chipsets being available in-house.
Infineon has proven its system-on-chip expertise in short range wireless systems and has produced more than 40 million transceiver chips for cordless DECT phones and WDCT systems, which operate in the same frequency bands as Bluetooth (2.4 GHz).
