The P0 powertrain configuration with the belt-driven integrated starter generator (BISG) offers the lowest integration cost and development effort for a 48 V mild hybrid electrical system. With a focus on cost effectiveness and development efficiency, the BISG stands out as the most economical option for integrating a 48 V mild hybrid system. The electrical machine operates up to 10 kW of maximum peak power with low-power density in a three-phase or six-phase configuration. However, in the belt starter generator, the electrical machine torque is limited for boost by the belt connection, and the engine, and transmission friction losses reduce the recuperation efficiency.

Infineon offers a complete and comprehensive system solution, including supply ICs, microcontrollers, sensors, smart power drivers, high-power MOSFETs, and transceivers. The block diagram above shows the basic layout of the semiconductors used to control a BISG with an exciter winding (separate excitation of the synchronous machine). Here, the microcontroller enables both field-oriented controls of the electric motor and control of the exciter winding in alternator operation. According to safety requirements, the key components (microcontroller, PMIC, and three-phase gate driver) are ISO 26262 ASIL-D compliant.
